NSB Supports Growing to Give’s Mission to Combat Food Insecurity

BRUNSWICK—In 2017, a dedicated group of individuals united together with a vision to grow organic vegetables using climate-friendly methods to support local people facing food insecurity. This vision became Growing to Give, a non-profit farming operation based at Scatter Good Farm in Brunswick. Since then, Growing to Give has produced over 95,000 pounds of vegetables, equivalent to nearly 80,000 meals, solidifying its role as a vital community resource.

“Food insecurity is a widespread problem in Maine. Growing to Give was born through the passion of friends and neighbors to cultivate high-quality organic produce, ensuring everyone has access to nutritious food,” said Christine Sloan, Board President of Growing to Give. “The food we grow is delivered to more than 30 food banks, food pantries, Head Start centers, low-income elderly housing complexes, school backpack programs, and other access sites.”

Growing to Give partners with over 200 volunteers to harvest and distribute vegetables across seven Maine counties.

“The food being produced is top quality and so abundant,” said Lisa, a Growing to Give volunteer. “It is a pleasure to be a part of collecting this food for people in need.”

Working to address food insecurity in Maine is an effort that has drawn support from numerous businesses, including Norway Savings Bank, which has provided financial assistance to Growing to Give since 2020, most recently with a $500 donation last month.

“What they have done and the difference they have made for families and individuals in need is awe-inspiring. We couldn’t be happier to play a small part in their massive impact,” said Dan Walsh, President and CEO of NSB.

“So often, the bulk of our regular donations include produce at the end of its life. What a delight for folks to be able to have firm tomatoes and fresh root veggies that can be stored for later,” said one food pantry representative.

Beyond donating organic vegetables, Growing to Give raises awareness of sustainable farming practices and fosters appreciation of nature among local youth through their educational programs.

“They’ve really cultivated a sense of community among volunteers and those being served,” said Walsh. “Through Growing to Give, you can see that the power of community can be harnessed to accomplish anything.”

“We’re so thankful for NSB’s continual support of the work at our farm,” said Sloan. “The interest and enthusiasm aid our efforts to reduce food insecurity in our community. The support of our local business community keeps us growing!”

There are many ways to support Growing to Give. Get to know this nonprofit at its annual festival fundraiser, Farmyard Jam, on Saturday, July 20. The old-style farm and music festival features local bands, farm tours, food trucks, children’s activities, and more. Proceeds from the event benefit Growing to Give, which also welcomes donations and interested volunteers.
